A Low-Cost Air Quality Monitoring Project Details
| Abstract |
This research tackles the serious problem of environmental damage and health risks caused by air pollution by building and testing a cheap, easily expandable Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring system. The core of the system is a NodeMCU microcontroller, which handles processing and data transmission. It is connected to dedicated sensors that continuously measure: – Particulate matter (PM) – Carbon monoxide (CO) – Ozone (Oβ) – Ambient temperature – Relative humidity The sensor readings are sent wirelessly to the ThingSpeak cloud platform, where they can be viewed remotely, stored, and analyzed statistically. Tests carried out in a variety of settings show that the system can spot local pollution spikes. In
polluted areas, particulateβmatter levels were up to twice the national ambient airβquality standards, while the measured gases stayed within allowed limits. The approach offers a solid base for: – Mapping local airβquality index (AQI) values – Calibrating sensors – Analyzing how pollution changes over time Overall, this framework acts as a practical guide for creating IoTβbased environmental monitoring setups, covering sensor integration, data validation, and cloudβbased implementation.
