Environmental Availability Trace Metals Fired Project Details
| Abstract |
This research-oriented project investigates the environmental feasibility of recycling marine dredged sediments as a partial replacement for natural clay in the manufacturing of fired bricks. Given the massive annual volume of dredged harbor sediments, their valorization in construction materials offers a sustainable alternative to ocean or land disposal. This study focuses on evaluating the environmental availability and mobilization behavior of potentially toxic trace metals, specifically cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), within the brick matrix. The methodology involves a preliminary desalination step of the raw dredged sediment, followed by brick fabrication and thermal treatment. Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) is utilized
to determine total metal concentrations after microwave-assisted aqua regia digestion. To assess the potential environmental release, single extractions using water, hydrochloric acid, and EDTA, alongside a comprehensive sequential extraction procedure, are conducted on both raw sediments and the final fired bricks. This systematic evaluation provides critical insights into the chemical binding forms and immobilization efficiency of heavy metals during the firing process, supporting the development of safe, eco-friendly construction materials.
