Sustainable Recovery Surface Chemical Engineering Project Details

Abstract

This research looks at how to sustainably recover and chemically treat spent graphite anodes from end‑of‑life lithium‑ion batteries (LIBs) so they can be reused in dual‑ion battery systems. Traditional recycling plants focus on high‑value cathode materials, but pulling graphite out is still essential for a true circular economy in energy storage. The project gives a clear structure, methods, and step‑by‑step guidance for studying the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that forms on used graphite. It also shows how to test different solvent washing agents. In particular, the work compares water with organic solvents such as dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and then follows each wash with a defined thermal‑treatment schedule. Students will learn

how these solvent‑based surface changes affect the composition of the regenerated SEI and how that, in turn, influences the electrochemical performance of the graphite in second‑life applications. By measuring structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the recovered material, the project provides a systematic assessment of green chemical‑engineering routes that aim to: – limit cross‑contamination, – maximize solvent recovery, – improve the electrochemical efficiency of up‑cycled carbon.
