Mechanical Fatigue Trees Mitigated Annual Project Details

Abstract

This project looks at how living things reduce mechanical fatigue, using trees as a case study. It builds a theoretical model of fatigue damage in trees with Continuum Damage Mechanics (CDM). The model shows that adding a new growth ring each year works like an adaptive strategy to keep fatigue low. When a new outer layer forms, the older rings move inward, so they see less stress over time. The model assumes that radial growth keeps the bending stress in the trunk constant. With that assumption, high‑cycle fatigue failure is almost impossible until the tree is very old. This means trees either avoid building up high‑cycle fatigue and fail only

under sudden, extreme wind loads, or they adjust bending stress as they grow to use material efficiently. For M.Tech students, the framework can be used to simulate self‑growing engineering structures that shift stress to stop fatigue from spreading. Fried Engineers can help with implementation, mathematical modeling, and setting up simulations to study these natural fatigue‑reduction methods.
