Assessment Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Project Details
| Abstract |
This research-oriented project focuses on the thermodynamic, economic, and environmental evaluation of an open-cycle Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system, modeled on the thermal profiles of Cenderawasih Bay, Papua, Indonesia. Utilizing historical oceanographic data spanning from 1955 to 2018, the study models the performance of an OTEC plant operating under a mean sea-surface temperature of 29.28 Β°C and a deep-water temperature of 8.19 Β°C at a depth of 500 meters. The thermodynamic evaluation establishes a theoretical Carnot efficiency of 6.98% and simulates an electrical power output of approximately 7,750 kW. Additionally, the open-cycle configuration is assessed for its desalinated freshwater co-production capability, yielding an estimated 22,622 liters per day. A
comprehensive techno-economic analysis is structured to evaluate the levelized cost of electricity, projected at Rp539.448 per kWh. Finally, the project addresses critical environmental considerations, specifically modeling the ecological risks associated with the discharge of nutrient-rich deep seawater, which may induce localized harmful algal blooms. This framework provides systematic guidance for simulating marine-based renewable energy systems and conducting multi-criteria feasibility assessments in tropical maritime regions.
