Energy vertex time response LiquidO Project Details
| Abstract |
This resource provides project development support and component guidance for analyzing the instrumentation of next-generation radiation detectors. The source study evaluates the BPULSE prototype, a 4-liter LiquidO detector designed to confine scintillation light through stochastic scattering in an opaque medium. The detector features a 160 mm cube of opaque scintillator integrated with a lattice of 64 wavelength-shifting (WLS) fibers arranged in alternating orthogonal layers at a 20 mm pitch, read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). To characterize its response to sub-MeV energy depositions, the setup utilizes a Compton-coincidence calibration system. This system tags electron recoils of known energy from $^{137}$Cs and $^{60}$Co gamma-ray sources using a NaI(Tl) spectrometer. The experimental
findings demonstrate a linear energy response of $48.3 pm 1.5$ photoelectrons (p.e.) per MeV, with $19.04 pm 0.07$ p.e. collected for 373.4 keV electrons. Students can utilize this research direction to study light-confinement detector physics, design fiber-readout geometries, and simulate Compton scattering coincidence systems. The overview serves as structuring guidance for modeling detector responses and understanding the spatial and temporal resolution of opaque scintillator targets.
