Abstract

The rapid proliferation of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing has escalated the consumption of virgin thermoplastic filaments, contributing to petrochemical resource depletion and high material costs. To address these environmental and economic challenges, this research investigates the viability of recycling post-consumer municipal plastic waste into functional 3D printing filaments. Utilizing an optimized desktop single-screw extrusion system, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) from discarded milk jugs and recycled polypropylene (PP) from packaging containers are processed into extruded filaments. Standardized tensile test specimens are fabricated via FDM in strict accordance with ASTM D638 Type IV dimensional specifications. The mechanical performance of the recycled waste-derived components, including ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus, and elongation

at break, is systematically evaluated and benchmarked against standard commercial virgin polylactic acid (PLA) filaments. This comparative experimental analysis provides critical insights into the structural integrity, thermal stability, and mechanical limitations of recycled polyolefins. The resulting dataset serves as a foundation for optimizing extrusion parameters and material blending strategies, offering a sustainable, decentralized recycling methodology to reduce the ecological footprint of additive manufacturing.
