Fabrication Architectured Biomaterials Multilayer Co‐Extrusion Project Details
| Abstract |
This project looks at how to make and test architectured biomaterials using two processes together: multilayer co‑extrusion and fused deposition modeling (FDM). We first create composite filaments that have alternating micro‑layers of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). We test filaments with 5, 17, and 129 layers. After printing, we check the filaments for strength, layer alignment, and how well the layers stick together, making sure the layered structure stays intact. We then measure the printed scaffolds’ tensile strength, elasticity, and ability to absorb energy. The 17‑layer PLA/TPU composite shows the best mechanical performance. The study also sets up a way to judge whether these anisotropic, multilayered scaffolds are
suitable for biomedical use. We examine how the tiny surface pattern affects cardiomyocyte alignment, shape, and function. By combining top‑down additive manufacturing with bottom‑up co‑extrusion, we provide practical guidance for designing tissue‑engineering constructs that have specific mechanical and biological properties.
