Electrical resistivity tomography Air Force Project Details
| Abstract |
This work looks at how electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) can improve the description of groundwater conditions in the Northeast Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Arroyos areas at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The Mound Fault, a subsurface structural anomaly, strongly controls local groundwater flow and how the aquifer is divided. To map these features, two ERT surveysβnamed AFRL9 and AFRL10βwere carried out using a mix of DipoleβDipole and Strong Gradient electrode arrays. The method applies direct current, measures voltage differences, and converts them into a picture of subsurface resistivity. The resulting resistivity sections reveal changes in rock type, the shape of the fault, and other structural breaks. A projectβsupport
framework was created to guide the processing, inversion, and interpretation of the field data. By combining the inversion results with existing borehole logs, the approach seeks to clear up uncertainties around the Mound Fault. This guidance helps researchers test how well multiβarray ERT works for complex hydrogeological models and should lead to more accurate groundwater flow models in faulted alluvial basins.
