Intensifying compound drought–heatwave events weaken Project Details
| Abstract |
This work studies how combined drought‑heatwave events (CDHW) change over space and time and how they affect ecosystem water‑use efficiency (WUE) in the Nile River Basin. We use the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) together with modern heat‑wave detection algorithms to pick out extreme climate sequences. The approach combines MODIS‑derived Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) and Evapotranspiration (ET) data that have been harmonized, letting us evaluate the link between carbon and water cycles. Phase‑space trajectory analysis and machine‑learning models are applied to examine ecosystem responses, the influence of past droughts (drought memory), and climate variability across different vegetation zones. Results show a clear increase in CDHW frequency after 2014. During an
event, WUE can rise briefly because ET drops quickly, but the long‑term resilience of most of the basin’s ecosystems is reduced. The project provides a clear method for hydrological modeling, integrating remote‑sensing data, and statistical validation. It offers practical guidance for regional water‑resource management and climate‑adaptation strategies. The proposed framework can serve as a solid reference for studying complex climate‑vegetation feedbacks as global warming intensifies.
