Effect silica fume strength recovery Project Details

Abstract

This research-oriented project investigates the mechanical and durability performance of concrete incorporating high volumes of sugarcane bagasse ash (BA) as a supplementary cementitious material, with a specific focus on mitigating strength loss through silica fume (SF) addition. While bagasse ash offers a sustainable alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), high replacement levels typically compromise mechanical properties due to cement dilution. To address this limitation, this study evaluates concrete mixtures with BA replacement levels ranging from 0% to 50%, supplemented by a constant 5% dosage of silica fume. The experimental program encompasses microstructural characterization using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Key performance

indicators, including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and water absorption, are systematically measured to establish a comprehensive performance map. The integration of silica fume is analyzed with respect to its role in pore refinement, particle packing, and pozzolanic activity. This project provides structural engineering students with a structured framework for evaluating sustainable concrete mixes, offering guidance on experimental design, microstructural interpretation, and durability assessment methodologies.
