Renewable Energy-Based Microgrids Rural Electrification Project Details
| Abstract |
This research addresses the critical challenge of rural electrification in Nigeria, where a significant portion of the population in remote regions, particularly the North-East and North-West geopolitical zones, lacks access to reliable grid electricity. To bridge this energy access gap, this study investigates the technical viability and economic feasibility of decentralized, autonomous microgrids. The proposed framework integrates multiple renewable energy sources, including solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind turbines, small-scale hydroelectric power, and biogas generators, coupled with battery energy storage systems (BESS). By utilizing localized resource assessments, the research evaluates the performance of these hybrid configurations against conventional grid extension methods. A comprehensive techno-economic analysis is presented to determine the optimal
sizing, levelized cost of energy (LCOE), and net present cost (NPC) of the microgrid configurations under varying load profiles. Furthermore, the study systematically examines the key technical, regulatory, and financial challenges hindering widespread microgrid deployment in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. The findings provide a structured methodology for designing resilient, low-carbon off-grid power systems, offering valuable guidance for policy formulation, system optimization, and sustainable infrastructure development in developing nations.
