Environmental evaluation electricity generation landfill Project Details

Abstract

This project evaluates the environmental impact of generating electricity from landfill gas (LFG). It uses the Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP) together with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) first‑order decay model, and it focuses on Karachi as a typical urban example. Fast growth of cities and poor waste handling in many developing metros create serious environmental problems and raise energy needs. The study first calculates how much municipal solid waste is produced, what it’s made of, and how much of it is organic. These data are then used to estimate how much methane the nearby landfills will generate over time. By linking the IPCC waste model with LEAP‑based

energy scenarios, the framework can: – Simulate how much electricity could be produced from the captured gas – Measure the drop in greenhouse‑gas emissions compared with a grid that relies mainly on fossil fuels The method also gives clear steps for: – Checking different waste‑to‑energy options – Testing whether gas‑collection systems are technically feasible – Quantifying the environmental gains from replacing conventional power generation The final model works as a decision‑support tool for city planners. It offers a systematic way to test policy ideas, improve landfill‑gas recovery rates, and promote sustainable waste management in urban areas.
