Debris Flow Detection System Tree-Topology Project Details
| Abstract |
This work tackles the need for strong, passive, wideβarea systems that can detect debris flows and landslides. Conventional electrical sensor networks often fail in harsh environments because they are vulnerable to lightning, weather, and powerβsupply problems in remote areas. To solve these issues, the paper proposes a passive opticalβfiber sensor network built in a treeβtopology. The core of the system includes a distributed feedback (DFB) laser, a fiber amplifier, and an amplified photodetector. By adding several optical couplers and carefully placed delay fibers, the network creates many sensing ports without putting any active electronics at the sensor locations. The physical sensor heads are simple fiber patch cables or fiber mirrors
that break or disconnect when struck by moving debris. Timeβdivision multiplexing (TDM) is used to watch all sensor nodes at once; each nodeβs position is identified by its unique time delay. Labβscale simulations show that a fiveβstage treeβtopology works as expected, and the paper outlines how the design could be expanded to a sevenβstage network. This approach gives M.Tech researchers a solid base for projects in optical communications, multiplexing methods, and environmentalβhazard monitoring.
