Greenhouse Gas Emissions during Windrow Project Details
| Abstract |
This research-oriented project evaluates the dynamics of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, specifically methane (CHββ), nitrous oxide (NβO), and carbon dioxide (COβ), under different organic waste management practices. Focusing on pig manure management, the study compares windrow composting against traditional open-air dumping, both with and without the integration of bulking agents. Specifically, a comparative experimental framework is established using four distinct treatment configurations: 100% raw pig manure subjected to windrow composting, 100% manure under open-air dumping, and 90:10% manure-to-wood-shavings mixtures applied to both composting and dumping systems. Over a 40-day monitoring period, gas samples are systematically collected using the static flux chamber method and analyzed via gas chromatography to quantify emission
rates. The evaluation focuses on how the addition of carbon-rich wood shavings alters the physical structure, aeration, and microbial pathways within the waste matrix, thereby mitigating anaerobic pockets responsible for high CHββ and NβO generation. This project provides structural guidance for modeling agricultural waste emissions, optimizing composting parameters, and implementing sustainable waste-to-resource systems to minimize the environmental footprint of livestock operations.
