Residual biodegradable microplastics derived compostable Project Details

Abstract

This project tackles a key environmental‑engineering problem: measuring the tiny biodegradable plastic pieces that remain after compostable packaging is processed in large‑scale composters. The method follows several clear steps. First, the material is physically separated into size fractions. Next, hot water is used to break up clumps. Then a calcium‑chloride solution separates particles by density. Finally, a mild hydrogen‑peroxide digestion removes organic matter, leaving the microplastic fragments behind. The remaining polymers—polylactic acid (PLA), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), and polyhydroxyalkanoate‑co‑valerate (PHBV)—are identified and measured with Fourier‑transform infrared (FTIR) microscopy. The study follows the plastics from their physical break‑down during full‑scale composting to their chemical breakdown (mineralization) once they enter soil. The

results give numbers that show how each packaging type degrades. PLA and PBAT break down quickly, while PHBV degrades more slowly because of its structure. The framework gives environmental‑engineering students step‑by‑step instructions to set up and check the microplastic extraction process, to model how fast the plastics biodegrade in soil, and to evaluate whether compost‑derived soil amendments are safe for the environment.
