Optimizing Hybrid SMR–Renewable Energy Systems Project Details
| Abstract |
This framework looks at how to cut energy costs and carbon emissions in remote communities that rely on diesel. It does this by optimizing a hybrid system that combines a small modular reactor (SMR) with renewable sources. The model includes: – a 6 MW light‑water SMR, – wind turbines, – photovoltaic (solar) panels, – a battery storage system, – combined heat‑and‑power recovery, and – an electrolyzer that makes hydrogen from excess electricity. A typical northern community cluster is used as a case study. The framework compares several hybrid setups with a conventional diesel‑only system. The techno‑economic analysis finds that the SMR‑wind‑battery mix gives the best economic results. It lowers both
the levelized cost of electricity and the net present cost much more than diesel alone or other hybrid options. In this setup, the SMR acts as the baseload source. It provides most of the electricity and a large amount of usable heat for district heating. Overall, the framework gives clear steps for modeling multi‑carrier microgrids, matching thermal and electrical loads, and scheduling energy storage in regions that are vulnerable to climate change.
