Solid state transformer for large scale renewable: source and project details
| Research overview |
The paper presents a four‑port solid‑state transformer (FPSST) that helps integrate large offshore wind and solar farms. Traditional low‑frequency transformers are bulky and power converters are often inefficient, so the new design adds a modular multilevel converter that can accept both medium‑voltage AC and DC sources. Each port is isolated with high‑frequency DC‑DC converters that use a transformer made from advanced magnetic material. This keeps the whole system small, light, and efficient. On the output side, a cascaded H‑bridge multilevel inverter creates high‑voltage AC with low harmonic distortion and tight voltage control. A series‑connected two‑quadrant converter, together with a discretised DC‑link capacitor, provides a steady high‑voltage DC output.
The authors tested the concept in MATLAB/Simulink and built a 1‑kW laboratory prototype. The prototype uses an amorphous‑alloy high‑frequency transformer. Test results show that the multi‑port hybrid topology works well for both high‑voltage AC and DC applications.

Project or research direction
This is a source-backed research starting point, not a tested, ready-made student project. Any implementation requires independent feasibility, safety and results verification.
Possible tools or components to evaluate
MATLAB/Simulink, Amorphous alloy-based high-frequency transformer, 1-kW scaled-down prototype components, Cascaded H-bridge inverter, Modular multilevel converter
Suggested verification steps
- Read the cited paper and check which methods, parameters and results it actually reports.
- Define a measurable project objective and list equipment or software you can access.
- Validate the proposed approach independently before claiming results, working code or experimental success.
Implementation ideas above are planning suggestions, not claims that the cited researchers built or tested those exact extensions.
