Advancing Chemical Reaction Engineering Entropy-Based Project Details
| Abstract |
This project looks at how to run a complex set of firstβorder reactions in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) in the most efficient way, using a method called Direct Entropy Minimization (DEM). Conventional CSTR design often gives several possible operating points, many of which are not thermodynamically optimal. To fix this, we build a thermodynamic model that balances mass, enthalpy, and entropy. The model calculates the rate at which entropy is produced. By minimizing that entropy generation, DEM finds the best link between the inlet temperature and the reaction temperature. Instead of many subβoptimal options, DEM gives a single, globally optimal operating condition. The model can be used to
boost process performance, cut thermodynamic losses, and raise thermal efficiency in continuous chemical processes. We also provide full support for setting up the model, guidance on how to use it, and a simulation framework to test the thermodynamic efficiency of consecutive reaction networks under different kinetic and thermal settings.
