Numerical Modeling Premixed Combustion Flame Project Details
| Abstract |
This project models how premixed flames spread and speed up when gases from a lithiumβion batteryβs thermal runaway are released. If a battery is mechanically, thermally, or electrically abused, it can undergo a violent reaction that vents highly flammable gas mixtures into a confined space. When those gases mix with air, they can cause a rapid burn (deflagration), make the flame move faster, and even trigger a transition to detonation (DDT). Both the structure and people nearby are then at serious risk. The study outlines a stepβbyβstep method for simulating turbulent premixed combustion of these multiβcomponent gas mixtures. It uses advanced CFD solvers that include detailed chemicalβkinetics and combustion models
to track the flame front and calculate the resulting pressure rise. This numerical framework helps identify the conditions that lead to flame acceleration in confined geometries. The results give practical guidance for designing safer venting systems, creating mitigation strategies, and improving safety procedures in battery energyβstorage units and electricβvehicle enclosures.
